When Should Your Child Have an Orthodontic Check? Early Signs to Watch

Learn how clear aligners and braces differ, and why an assessment matters.

Pallx Dental Insights 5 MIN READ

Most parents keep a close eye on their child's first wobbly tooth, but far fewer think about how the teeth and jaws are lining up underneath. Some bite problems are easier to spot and manage while a child is still growing. This guide explains when to book a first orthodontic check, which signs to look out for, and what to expect at the visit.

When Should Your Child Have Their First Orthodontic Check?

Many orthodontic guidelines suggest a first orthodontic check-up at around age 7. At this age, most children have a mix of baby teeth and permanent teeth, which gives the dentist enough information to see how the bite and jaws are developing.

Most patients start orthodontic treatment once their permanent teeth have come through, but some problems, such as certain crossbites and severe underbites, may be referred earlier while baby teeth are still present.

An early check does not mean your child will need braces at seven. For many children, the outcome is simply reassurance, or a plan to monitor growth over the next few years.

What Early Signs Should Parents Watch For?

You do not need to wait for a birthday to book a check. Speak to a dentist sooner if you notice any of the following:

  • Baby teeth lost much earlier or later than usual
  • Crowded teeth or large gaps as the permanent teeth come in
  • Lower front teeth sitting in front of the upper teeth (an underbite)
  • Upper teeth sitting inside the lower teeth when your child bites down (a crossbite)
  • Teeth that meet abnormally, or do not meet at all, when your child bites
  • The jaw shifting to one side or clicking when your child opens or closes their mouth
  • Difficulty chewing or biting, or frequent cheek biting
  • Mouth breathing
  • Thumb, finger or pacifier sucking that may be affecting the teeth or jaw

These signs do not always mean there is a problem, but they are worth having checked by a dentist.

Why Does an Early Orthodontic Check Matter?

Children's jaws are still growing, and some problems are easier to guide during this stage than after growth has finished. Early treatment, when needed, can help guide jaw growth and create room for permanent teeth that are coming in.

An early check can also pick up issues that parents may not see at home, such as missing, extra or impacted teeth that have not yet come through. A dentist may use X-rays to look below the gums.

Just as importantly, a check can tell you when not to start treatment. Some children are best monitored until more permanent teeth have come in, and the dentist can suggest the right time to review again.

What Happens at a Child's Orthodontic Check?

A first check is usually straightforward. During a dental consultation, the dentist will typically:

  1. Ask about your child's dental history and any habits, such as thumb sucking
  2. Examine the teeth, gums, bite and jaw movement
  3. Take X-rays or a digital scan if more detail is needed
  4. Explain what they found and whether your child needs treatment now, later or not at all

If treatment is advised, options depend on age and the type of problem. Older children and teens may later be suitable for self-ligating braces or clear aligners, while complex jaw problems may need a registered specialist orthodontist.

How Can Parents Protect Their Child's Oral Health Between Checks?

Good daily habits support healthy teeth while the bite develops:

  • Help your child brush twice a day with fluoride toothpaste, and supervise younger children so they use the right amount
  • Limit sugary snacks and drinks between meals
  • Mention any thumb, finger or pacifier habit to your dentist
  • Book regular dental check-ups and professional cleaning

Treating cavities early also matters. Baby teeth help guide the spacing for permanent teeth, and baby teeth lost to decay can affect the health of the adult teeth that follow. Small cavities can often be repaired with a tooth-coloured filling.
